The Family-Based Treatment Program is an outreach community-based mental health service designed to reduce the risk to children/youth and build the capacity of their families, by supporting them to reduce or overcome the negative effects and impact of a serious mental health disorder. The program demonstrates the effectiveness of in-home family support services and wraparound service planning for each youth and family, in combination with a Residential Treatment Care-Family Based (RTC-FB) program model. The services are delivered in collaboration with the MCFD Child and Youth Mental Health teams, in the communities of the North, Central, and South Okanagan.

The focus is to help the child/youth and family increase their:
  • Natural and Community Resources
  • Emotional Stability
  • Parenting Capacity
  • Interpersonal and Life Skills
  • Family Coping Strategies

We work with children/youth and their families in their homes and community to help them identify their strengths, challenges and needs. Together we develop, and work through, a service plan that supports the family to reach their goals.

We work in partnership with MCFD Child and Youth Mental Health Clinicians, and other support services identified by the family.

A one-bed, short-term therapeutic care home is available to provide care for the child/youth on an "as needed" basis. The home is a family-care setting, and provides treatment, brief stabilization, respite and/or transitional care. Placements in the care home are a component of the family's individualized service plan.

All referrals come directly from the clinicians at Child and Youth Mental Health (MCFD) clinics in Kelowna or Penticton. After receiving a referral, we contact the family to set up an initial meeting to discuss the program, and answer the family's questions. At this time, the plan for service begins.
